About John |

John Quinn is a life-long resident of Southeastern
Massachusetts. He lives in the town of Dartmouth
with his wife Jane, son Brendan, and daughter Emily.
Jane (Kvilhaug) Quinn grew up in the town of
Fairhaven in a close-knit Norwegian fishing
community. The son of Judge Thomas and Jean Quinn,
John is a member of a large family. He has five
brothers: Thomas, Andrew, Matthew, Peter and James
and a sister Kathleen.
John attended Dartmouth public schools until his
graduation from high school in 1981. He then pursued
his education at the University of Massachusetts at
Dartmouth where he received a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Economics. Subsequent to graduation from
the University, John received a law degree from
Suffolk University in Boston and a Masters degree in
Public Administration from the Kennedy School of
Government at Harvard University. He is currently on
track to receive his Doctorate in Public Policy from
the University of Massachusetts at Boston.
John practiced law full-time in the city of New
Bedford prior to being elected state representative
of the 9th Bristol District in 1992. He presently is
serving his 7th term in office, representing the
towns of Dartmouth, Freetown, Lakeville and the city
of New Bedford.
As state representative, John is an established
leader on issues that matter most to the people of
the Southcoast: ensuring a competitive economy for
businesses, making our schools better, preserving
access to quality and affordable health care,
preserving the environment, and being at the
forefront of protecting jobs in our region.
State Representative Quinn has served on many
committees in the Legislature, including the Natural
Resources, Energy, Insurance, Transportation and
Small Business and Community Development. He was
appointed vice-chairman of the Judiciary Committee
from 1996-2000 and Chairman of the Committee on
Banks and Banking from 2000-2004. He currently is a
ranking member of the House Committee on Ways and
Means.
During his tenure in the House, Representative Quinn
has also been appointed to several special
committees dealing with Adoption, Rules Reform, and
the Administration and Organization of the
Judiciary. He also served on the Buzzards Bay Oil
Spill Commission in which he was the chief architect
in forming. John currently is a member of the UMASS
Cranberry Oversight Committee and the UMASS Center
for Policy Analysis Advisory Committee.
Representative Quinn has received many awards in
recognition of his legislative efforts. These
include the Bristol County Convention and Visitors
Bureau Distinguished Community Service Award, the
Dartmouth Educators Friend of Education Award, the
Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Legislator of the Year
Award, the New Bedford Child and Family Service
Rodman Award, the Equal Justice Coalition Award, and
the Southeastern Massachusetts Legal Assistance
Corporation Pillar of Justice Award. He has also
received an honorary degree from the Southern New
England School of Law and was recently awarded the
University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth’s Samuel A.
Stone Alumni Achievement Award.
John is very active in the local community. He is a
long-time youth sports coach in the Dartmouth Youth
Athletic Association (DYAA) and the Dartmouth Youth
Soccer Association (DYSA). He is a member of the
Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and a committee member
for the Heritage Day of Portugal in Boston. John has
also been very involved in many local charitable
organizations. |
