Voc-Tech towns win state aid for assessments
By CURT BROWN, Standard-Times staff writer
Dartmouth and Fairhaven learned yesterday they will
receive a total of $425,000 in additional state aid
to help with their assessments for the Greater New
Bedford Regional Vocational-Technical High School in
New Bedford.
The money -- $216,000 for Dartmouth and $209,000 for
Fairhaven -- is a big assist for the two SouthCoast
communities, both strapped for cash.
Rep. John F. Quinn, D-Dartmouth, and Sen. Mark C.W.
Montigny, D-New Bedford, announced the awards
yesterday.
Both towns have seen their state assessments rise by
more than 25 percent this year.
Students from New Bedford, Dartmouth and Fairhaven
attend GNB Voc-Tech.
The announcement comes as Dartmouth prepares to hold
its fall Town Meeting tonight at 7 in the Dartmouth
Middle School auditorium.
"This is good news on a bleak economic front," Rep.
Quinn said.
Sen. Montigny said the money underscores the
importance of education. "There are few things more
important than making sure education is the singular
focus."
Local officials greeted the news with enthusiasm.
"That's absolutely fantastic," Jreck R. Leduc,
chairman of the Dartmouth Select Board, said
yesterday.
"This is a very welcomed adjustment. Times are tough
and this certainly helps," he said.
Michael Silvia, chairman of the Fairhaven Board of
Selectmen, said he expected to receive "a modest
amount," but nothing like $209,000.
"I'm very happy with our state senator," he said of
Sen. Montigny.
He said there is no designated purpose for the
money, which will go into the town's general fund.
"It will just help us put a budget together," he
said.
Fairhaven's special Town Meeting is scheduled for
Oct. 18.
