- Local Representatives Hold Triple EEE Briefing
July 20, 2007
Boston, MA – State Representatives Stephen R.
Canessa (D-New Bedford) and John F. Quinn
(D-Dartmouth) continue to play an active role in
pursuing solutions concerning the spread of the
mosquito borne Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)
virus and West Nile Virus (WNV) in Southeastern
Massachusetts. Recently, they organized a
legislative briefing with presenters from many
various state agencies.
The briefing has held for the legislators and their
staff to learn of and discuss the inter-agency
response to mosquito borne illnesses. A very
knowledgeable group of presenters spoke on this
important issue, including several commissioners and
doctors from the Departments of Public Health,
Department of Agricultural Resources, Department of
Environmental Protection and Department of Fish and
Game.
“With the tragedies over the past few years, and the
recent positive test results in this years testing
of EEE, sharing information with the state agencies
most involved on this issue is critical,” stated
Rep. Canessa. “This briefing was a great opportunity
to learn how these state agencies work together to
combat EEE and WNV, and to learn of what is being
done this year to further protect our public health
and safety.”
“It was great to see the response we received from
all the state agencies that have a stake in this
very important public safety issue,” said Rep.
Quinn. “A large amount of topics legislators deal
with unfortunately is centered on the Greater Boston
area. It was nice to see that concerns from
residents south of Boston get the attention it
deserves.”
During this meeting the local officials had the
opportunity to ascertain the Departments’ strategies
for combating EEE and WNV for the current mosquito
season.
Representatives and health officials from the area
discussed the most efficient and safe solutions to
avoiding another EEE and WNV occurrence. The
legislative briefing was very informative and
equipped the legislators and their staff with
information and packets to better inform their
communities and constituents.
