- Dartmouth Receives $371,000 from State for
Education
August 20, 2007
State Representative John F. Quinn (D-Dartmouth) and
State Senator Mark C. Montigny today announced that
the town of Dartmouth will be receiving $371,000
from the state’s “pothole” account to help cover the
increasing costs of its assessment to the Greater
New Bedford Regional Vocational School.
The State’s “pothole” account is appropriated by the
Legislature and is intended to provide supplemental
financial assistance to cities, towns and school
districts to address a variety of special
circumstances. Municipalities apply for these funds
and it is a very competitive process.
Language written into the Fiscal Year 2008 House
State Budget by Representative Quinn called for a
one million dollar increase to the fund from Fiscal
Year ’07 and preference shall be given to those
communities who did not receive such assistance last
year. With Senator Montigny’s assistance, this
language was also placed in the Senate version of
budget allowing for these funds to be allocated in a
timely manner.
“This was our number one priority during this budget
season,” said Rep. Quinn. “During these difficult
financial times we needed to take advantage of the
tools and assistance that are available from the
state to minimize the financial challenges the town
faces.”
“The vocational assessment was undue burden in a
year Dartmouth couldn’t afford,” said Sen. Montigny.
“This grant doesn’t solve all of the challenges, but
it is a major help at a time Dartmouth can use it
most.”
Representative Quinn and Senator Montigny also
petitioned Governor Patrick and Department of
Education Commissioner David Driscoll to release
these funds earlier than expected so Dartmouth can
factor in the money before the school year started.
Ordinarily, the grants from the pothole fund are not
announced till late October.
